How Australian holidays work

Public holidays are set by each state and territory, so only a handful are truly national. Every state also has its own days — Labour Day falls on different Mondays, Queensland celebrates the King's Birthday in October and Western Australia in September, and Melbourne has Melbourne Cup Day on the first Tuesday of November. When a holiday falls on a weekend, most states give a substitute weekday; for Anzac Day the rule varies by state.

Long weekends and travel in 2027

Australia Day is a Tuesday, so many people take Monday 25 January off. Easter is early and coincides with the end of the first school term in some states, which pushes up domestic airfares. The summer holidays from Christmas to late January are the peak for beach and family travel.
