How Brazilian holidays work
National holidays are set by federal law, while states and cities add their own — São Paulo city celebrates its anniversary on 25 January and Rio de Janeiro honours St Sebastian on 20 January. Carnival Monday and Tuesday, Ash Wednesday morning and Corpus Christi are pontos facultativos: federal offices close, and most businesses follow suit, but they are not legal holidays everywhere. There are no substitute days for weekend holidays.
Long weekends and travel in 2027
Brazilians love a feriadão (long weekend). In 2027, Independence Day, Our Lady of Aparecida and All Souls' Day all fall on a Tuesday, so many people bridge the Monday. Carnival (6–10 February) is the biggest event of the year: prices in Rio, Salvador and Recife soar and accommodation books out months ahead.
