How holidays work in India
India has only three national holidays by law — Republic Day, Independence Day and Gandhi Jayanti. Everything else is set by the Department of Personnel and Training for central government offices and by each state for its own offices, banks and schools, so dates vary across the country. The list here is Annexure I of the DoPT Office Memorandum for offices in Delhi and New Delhi. Employees also choose two restricted holidays, such as Raksha Bandhan (17 August) or Ganesh Chaturthi (4 September), from a separate list.
No substitute day is given when a holiday falls on a weekend. In 2027 that matters: Independence Day and Id-e-Milad both fall on Sunday 15 August, and Gandhi Jayanti and Dussehra on Saturdays.
