How Irish public holidays work

Ireland's public holidays are set by the Organisation of Working Time Act. Good Friday is not a public holiday, although many businesses close. When a public holiday falls on a weekend, there is no automatic substitute Monday; instead, employees are entitled to a paid day off within a month, an extra day of annual leave, or an extra day's pay. In practice many employers give Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 December off in 2027, as Christmas Day and St Stephen's Day fall on a weekend.

St Brigid's Day became a public holiday in 2023, the first named after a woman.

Long weekends and travel in 2027

Six of the ten holidays are Mondays. St Patrick's Day falls midweek in 2027; Dublin's parade and festival draw huge crowds, so book accommodation early if you plan to visit.
