How Italian holidays work
Italy's national holidays are set by law, and there are no substitute days when one falls on a weekend. Each town also celebrates its patron saint — for example Rome on 29 June, Milan on 7 December and Venice on 25 April — when local offices and many shops close. Law 151 of 2025 restored 4 October, the feast of Italy's patron saint Francis of Assisi, as a national holiday from 2026; in 2026 it fell on a Sunday, so 2027 is the first year it gives a weekday off.
Long weekends and travel in 2027
Republic Day (Wednesday 2 June) and the Immaculate Conception (Wednesday 8 December) fall midweek, while the new St Francis holiday creates a long weekend from 2 to 4 October. August is the traditional holiday month: around Ferragosto, many businesses in cities close and beaches are at their busiest. See where to stay in Rome.
