How New Zealand holidays work

The Holidays Act 2003 sets the national public holidays. Waitangi Day, Anzac Day, Christmas, Boxing Day and the two New Year days are "Mondayised": if they fall on a weekend and that is not a normal working day for you, the holiday moves to the following Monday (or Tuesday). Each region also has its own anniversary day, such as Auckland Anniversary Day in late January.

Matariki, the Māori New Year marked by the rising of the Pleiades star cluster, became a public holiday in 2022. Its dates are fixed in law years in advance and always fall on a Friday.

Long weekends and travel in 2027

2027 is rich in long weekends: Waitangi, Anzac Day, King's Birthday, Matariki and Labour Day all create three-day breaks. Matariki weekend (25–27 June) falls in the ski season, so Queenstown and Ruapehu are busy.
