How Taiwan's holidays work
The Directorate-General of Personnel Administration publishes the government office calendar each spring. Under the rules for commemorative days and festivals, a holiday that falls on a Saturday is compensated on the previous working day and one that falls on a Sunday on the next working day, which is why so many dates in the table are "compensatory days". Private employers follow the Labor Standards Act, and most give the same days off.
Recent law changes added Teachers' Day (28 September), Retrocession Day (25 October), Constitution Day (25 December) and the day before Lunar New Year's Eve as days off, so 2027 has more holidays than a few years ago.
Travel tips for 2027
The Lunar New Year week and the four-day Tomb Sweeping weekend (3–6 April) are peak domestic travel times: train and bus tickets out of Taipei sell out, and many small restaurants close for the first few days of the new year.
