How Vietnam's holidays work

The Labour Code sets Vietnam's paid public holidays: New Year's Day, five days for Tet, Hung Kings Commemoration Day, 30 April, 1 May and two days for National Day. Each year the Ministry of Home Affairs proposes how Tet and National Day are arranged for civil servants, and the government approves it; private employers usually follow the same pattern. When a holiday falls on a weekly day off, workers are generally entitled to a compensatory day on the next working day.

Tet is by far the most important holiday. Many shops and family restaurants close for several days around Lunar New Year's Day (Saturday 6 February 2027), while tourist areas and hotels stay open.

Travel tips for 2027

Domestic flights and trains sell out before Tet, and the 30 April–1 May weekend is a beach-holiday peak in Da Nang, Nha Trang and Phu Quoc. For bases, see where to stay in Hanoi and Tet 2027.

Calculated from the national holidays above with a Saturday–Sunday weekend; regional holidays and company rules can add days.
