Expected Eid al-Fitr 2027
Eid al-Fitr, the "festival of breaking the fast", marks the first day of Shawwal, the month after Ramadan. It is one of the two main festivals of the Islamic year, and in many countries it is the biggest public holiday of all.

Dates follow the Umm al-Qura calendar. Countries that rely on local crescent sightings can celebrate a day later, and a few communities in Europe and North America follow their local council's announcement.
9 March or 10 March: how the date is decided
On the evening of the 29th day of Ramadan, sighting committees look for the new crescent moon just after sunset. If it is seen, the next day is Eid. If it is not, Ramadan runs to a 30th day and Eid follows on the day after. For 2027, the 29th of Ramadan falls on Monday 8 March, so the announcement is usually made that evening. Governments then confirm the public holiday dates, which is why official holiday notices often list Eid "subject to moon sighting".
How long is the Eid holiday?
Holiday length varies widely. Saudi Arabia and the UAE typically give several days to over a week for government staff. Indonesia combines the national holiday with "collective leave" days, creating a long break known as Lebaran. Pakistan, Bangladesh, Egypt and Turkey usually close offices for three to four days. In Singapore, Hari Raya Puasa 2027 is a single public holiday on Wednesday 10 March 2027, as announced by the Ministry of Manpower. In Malaysia it is a two-day national holiday. In the UK and the US it is not a public holiday, but many schools and employers allow time off.
What people do on Eid
The day starts with a special congregational prayer shortly after sunrise, often held in large open spaces. Before the prayer, families pay zakat al-fitr, a small charity meant to let everyone celebrate. Then come new clothes, visits to relatives and a lot of food — sweet dishes are a theme, which is why Eid al-Fitr is sometimes called the "Sweet Eid". Children receive money or gifts (eidi), and in Turkey the holiday is known as Ramazan Bayramı or Şeker Bayramı.
