How holidays work in mainland China

Each year the General Office of the State Council announces how the statutory holidays are arranged. Long breaks are created by swapping days: some Saturdays or Sundays become ordinary working days (调休) so that the holiday can run for a week or more. Check the make-up days in the table — offices, schools and many businesses work on those weekends.

Spring Festival and National Day ("Golden Week") are the two biggest travel peaks of the year. Hundreds of millions of trips are made, train tickets sell out within minutes of release, and popular sights such as the Forbidden City and the Bund are extremely crowded.

Travel tips for 2027

If you can, visit just before or after the long holidays. Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan follow different calendars — see Hong Kong public holidays 2027 and Taiwan public holidays 2027.
